Where this applies
This code applies to everyone taking part in neXus: members, the board, Performance Line, guests and visiting crews. It covers rehearsals, filming, showcases, socials, KonneX, travel, and our group chats and social media. University of Chicago policies also apply to every member.
What we expect
- Treat everyone with respect, whatever their experience, background or identity.
- Show up for your cast and teams. If you can't make it, say so early.
- Give feedback kindly. When you're teaching, correct people without embarrassing them.
- Respect consent. Ask before filming or posting people outside planned shoots, and honor requests not to be filmed.
- Look after shared spaces, equipment and venues.
- Represent neXus well at competitions and when we host other crews at KonneX.
What we don't tolerate
- Harassment, including sexual harassment, online or in person.
- Discrimination against anyone for who they are.
- Hazing. Joining neXus or Performance Line never requires anything beyond the application or audition.
- Retaliation against anyone who raises a concern or takes part in a review.
- Pressuring anyone to drink, use substances, or perform beyond their physical limits.
- Sharing private photos, videos or messages of other people without their consent.
Safety at rehearsals and shows
Warm up, drink water and tell someone if you get hurt. Nobody has to perform a move they're not comfortable with, and teachers should offer alternatives. In an emergency, call 911.
Raising a concern
Talk to any board member, or email the Executive Directors at uchicagonexus@gmail.com. We'll keep it as private as we can and follow up. Some situations, like a threat to someone's safety, may mean we need to involve the University.
What happens next
Depending on what happened, the board may talk with the people involved, change casting or team roles, remove someone from events or Performance Line, or end their membership, following our constitution and bylaws. Serious matters may be referred to the University, which has its own disciplinary process.
